Betty Harris Sherrill, 93, peacefully passed away on December 5, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. A cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Betty lived a long, full life marked by curiosity, kindness, and a gentle spirit that endeared her to all who knew her.

Born in Statesville, NC, on June 18, 1932, to Lee Roy and Bertie Harris, Betty carried the values of her upbringing with her throughout her life. She spent most of her adult years in Decatur, GA, where she was a devoted member of North Decatur United Methodist Church and formed friendships that spanned decades. Over the past five years, she lived between the Canton and Cartersville homes of two of her sons, bringing her joyful presence into their households.

Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband and the love of her life, Gene; her parents; her brothers, Gordon and Willis Harris; her sister, Elsie Austin; and her best friend of 65 plus years, Mary Mapoles.

She is survived by her sons Jeff (Donna), Kendall (Kay), and Greg (Laura); eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved deeply and proudly.

A lifelong reader, Betty traveled the world through books long before she ever used a passport. Once she discovered the joy of reading apps, she blazed through more than 2,000 books in the past several years alone. Her curiosity also led her to YouTube, where she added new “travels” and late-night adventures to her repertoire. Her love of reading gave her the ability to chat with anyone about anything, kept her sharp until her passing, and it fueled the inquisitive, thoughtful nature that made her such a delight.

Above all, Betty possessed a remarkably sweet spirit. Whether greeting old friends or new acquaintances, she radiated warmth and grace. She embraced every year of her life with gratitude and even a bit of pride, often sharing her age with a smile.

A small service to inter her ashes will be held in 2026 in Old Fort, NC—her husband’s hometown and one of her most cherished places.

Though she may be gone from our sight, she remains forever in our hearts. We take comfort in knowing she is now wrapped in God’s loving embrace.

Care for Betty has been entrusted to In Their Honor Funeral and Cremation Providers.
