Chanpheng Phongsouthy, born on August 5, 1943, in Luang Prabang, Laos, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2025, in Woodstock, Georgia. His journey through life was characterized by a profound love for his family, a deep compassion for others, and a remarkable dedication to his profession as an airplane mechanic.
Chanpheng's career began with his work for Air America, providing essential support during the Vietnam War through U.S. Aid. He committed himself to helping those in need, sharing food and resources with individuals facing hardships. This spirit of generosity was a cornerstone of Chanpheng's personality, reflecting his enduring belief in supporting and uplifting others.
He is remembered fondly by his daughters Souphaphone Keovongkot, Khonesavanh Phongsouthy, Sayasone Phongsouthy, Sayasith Phongsouthy, and Khittaphone Keosoukanh, who often reminisce about their times together. The family fondly recalls how Chanpheng loved to cook for them, even if his culinary creations did not quite match the flavor of their mother's dishes. His attempts in the kitchen, especially his famous Lao Pancake, always brought laughter and warmth to their home.
One cherished memory illustrates Chanpheng's resilient spirit when the family first arrived in the United States. Without a vehicle, they would walk to the grocery store, all five children in tow, carrying bags filled with their purchases. These early days were filled with challenges, but with Chanpheng’s unwavering positivity, they forged ahead together as a family.
Another memorable moment highlights the joy Chanpheng felt when he purchased his first car in America. He had just landed a job, earning $500, and the thrill of owning a car was palpable. Despite the car’s quirk of making a loud “BOOM!” sound every time it was put in park, it became a symbol of happiness and new beginnings for the family.
Chanpheng’s love extended deeply to his grandchildren, whom he adored even more than his children. He had an incredible knack for spreading joy and kindness, and his legacy will undoubtedly live on through the heartfelt memories crafted with his family.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phonthone Phongsouthy, and his parents, Phoui and Tee Phongsouthy.
