Harriett Frances Mathis, a woman of grace, warmth, and vibrant spirit, departed this life on May 24, 2026, just shy of her ninety-second birthday. Born on June 4, 1934, in the historic town of Rome, Georgia, Frances' life journey was marked by a rich tapestry of experiences and deep commitments that touched the hearts of those privileged to know her.

From her earliest days, Frances was shaped by the diverse landscapes of her youth—born in Rome, raised in Detroit, she cultivated a unique blend of cultural appreciation and personal charm. She embraced her southern accent with a quiet resilience, often tolerating good-natured jests while maintaining a dignified and gentle presence. She possessed an enduring love for movement, from gliding gracefully on ice skates to dancing, embodying a lively spirit.

Frances' intellectual pursuits were as varied as her hobbies. A devoted registered nurse, she served faithfully in hospitals across Rome, Seattle, and Atlanta, providing care and comfort with unwavering dedication. Her academic journey was marked by a shared milestone with her son David when, in 1979, both walked across the stage at Berry College to receive their degrees—a poignant testament to their bond and her enduring commitment to education. Moreover, she was on the cusp of earning an MBA, having completed all but two classes, a reflection of her tenacious pursuit of knowledge and personal growth.

Creativity and passion found abundant outlets in Frances' life. She was an accomplished cook and baker, with a specialty in Asian cuisine that delighted family and friends alike. Her eye for beauty extended to her home, where she expressed herself through thoughtful decoration, creating warm and inviting spaces. A cherished member of the Chapel on the Hill United Methodist Church, she lent her voice to the choir and found love within its community, meeting her husband Richard amidst the sacred harmonies.

Frances often described herself as possessing “a silly streak,” a modest glimpse into her lively personality that balanced kindness with whimsy. This playful spirit endeared her to many and created cherished memories with family and friends that will endure beyond her passing.

She is preceded in death by her loving parents, Christian Lawrence Wheaton and Grace Wheaton, and her sisters Nadine Wheaton and Ruth Swierkos, as well as her son Roy David Bell. Though their absence is deeply felt, Frances' legacy lives on vibrantly through her surviving family: her devoted son Rev. John (Andy) Bell and his wife LaDawn; her daughter-in-law Sheryl Bell; her grandchildren Steven David Bell and his wife Alyssa, Katherine Bell Smith and her husband Matthew, and Brian Matthew Bell with his wife Julie; and her great-grandchildren Isabell, A.C., Wilder, Lilly, and Caroline, each carrying forward the love and values she so tenderly imparted.

The family will hold a private service in her honor, gathering in remembrance of a life well lived, a heart generously shared, and a soul peacefully resting. Harriett Francis Mathis leaves behind a luminous imprint—a testament to a life rich in love, learning, and laughter. She will be treasured always, her memory a beacon of warmth and inspiration to all who knew her.
