Herman Nemar Broadaway, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on August 1, 2026, leaving behind a legacy woven with devotion, service, and unforgettable moments. Born on March 23, 1948, in Atlanta, Georgia, Herman grew up immersed in the vibrant heart of his hometown. He attended Brown High School in Atlanta, forming lifelong bonds and laying the foundation for a life marked by determination, kindness, and quiet strength.

From a young age, Herman was guided by a sense of duty and a willingness to serve. He answered his country’s call during the Vietnam War, serving honorably as a helicopter crew chief. With humility and courage, Herman carried the often unspoken burdens of war, and returned home with a deepened compassion for those he loved and a steady dedication to living each day with purpose.

After his military service, Herman devoted many years to civilian work, building a respected reputation as a specialist in construction. He traveled across the country, applying specialized coatings for tanks, towers, and bridges, working on commercial, industrial and residential projects. His meticulous skill and steadfast work ethic earned him the admiration of colleagues and the enduring trust of those who relied on his expertise. Later, he retired from Anniston Army Depot as a small arms specialist, known not just for his proficiency but for the genuine care he brought to every task.

Beyond his professional life, Herman embraced simple joys with palpable passion. He was an avid fishing enthusiast, finding peace and perspective beside quiet waters. An arms enthusiast, he was often called upon to repair cherished pieces for family and friends, happy to share his knowledge and offer his steady hands. Among his more homespun talents, Herman’s knack for canning pickles and green tomatoes was legendary within his family, adding a flavorful touch to countless gatherings and meals.

Above all, Herman’s heart found its home within his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Louise Marion Joeckel Broadaway, whose unwavering partnership was his constant source of comfort and joy. Their bond, built on years of shared laughter, challenges, and profound affection, was an inspiration to all who knew them.

He leaves behind his beloved children: daughter Sherri Lynn Broadaway, and sons Kevin Wayne Broadaway, Andrew James Broadaway, Jason Bart Broadaway, and Edward Wyat Broadaway, as well as Adam Wade Broadaway, each of whom carries forward aspects of his strength, generosity, and gentle wisdom. Though touched by the sorrow of loss, their love for him persists, undiminished by time or distance. He also leaves behind two sisters Linda Lea Broadaway Barkwell Maxwell, Mildred Virginia Betz and one brother Joel Roger Broadaway.

Cherished memories will continue through Herman’s grandchildren: Hailey Rose Luallen, Brianna Hope Luallen, Christina Faith Luallen, Kyle Wayne, Klayton Lee, Kale Jackson, Addison Michelle, Kaleb Knox, Anna Kate, Natalie Jane, Sawyer James, Jared Wayne Jr Broadaway, Blake Shelafoe, Ashley Shelafoe, and Cheyenne Shelafoe. He was also blessed to be a great-grandfather to Violet Ophilia Luallen-Smith and Julius Achilles Luallen-Smith. Each generation benefited from his lessons—whether shared in a quiet story, an encouraging word, or the warmth of his embrace.

Herman’s memory is honored alongside those who predeceased him: his father, James Lee Broadaway; his mother, Sally Rose Echols Broadaway; his brother, Elbert Lemanuel Broadway; his dear son, Jared Wayne Broadaway; and his grandson, Austin Nemar Shelafoe Broadaway. The echoes of their love and the stories they created together will remain treasured by all who survive.

Family and friends will gather to pay tribute to Herman’s life at a graveside service on August 12, 2026, at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. The service will begin promptly at 2:00 p.m., with attendees invited to arrive by 1:30 p.m. for the military procession—a fitting honor for a man who served his country with valor and humility.
