IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hugh Hawkins
Howell, III
July 23, 1946 – January 28, 2026
Hugh Hawkins Howell, III, was a larger-than-life personality. He was born on July 23, 1946, in Atlanta, Georgia. Hugh passed away peacefully at home on January 28, 2026, holding hands with the love of his life of 54 years, Marianne. He always said he was an incurable romantic, and their love story was one for the ages.
Hugh was an extraordinary man, whose charm and intelligence captivated all who had the pleasure of knowing him. With a master's degree and a voracious thirst for knowledge, Hugh stood out not just for his academic achievements but for his unwavering passion for sharing his insights with others. A natural storyteller, his captivating presence could light up any room, and his laughter had the power to fill a stadium with joy. Hugh's gift for oratory was matched only by his ability to engage in meaningful discourse on nearly any topic—whether it be philosophy, education, history, or family. His hobbies included, being an Amateur Radio Operator, substitute teacher, and reading over 7,000+ books in his lifetime. His commitment to sharing his gifts will long remain a cherished part of his remarkable legacy.
Hugh's influence extended beyond academics; he was a loving father, not just to his own children but to their friends and teammates over the years, often being the first person confided in and called upon. He always made the time to listen. Regardless of circumstances whether big or small, monumental or seemingly insignificant, he would remind us... "this too shall pass." He was known for his welcoming hugs and genuine interest in the lives of those around him. He was a sweet and generous soul who never met a stranger and a man full of second chances.
He is survived by his beloved wife Marianne, his son David and wife Lesley, and his three children Daniel, Cori, and Sarah. His legacy continues through his daughter Ethleen and her son Cayden, as well as his daughter Jenn, who with her husband John Tilley, shared the gift of five beautiful children: Margaret Anne, Grace, Frances, Audrey, and John. He is also survived by his brother, James Finn Howell and wife Susan, and sister Anna Fay Lohn. Each of these family members carries forward the love and lessons imparted by this exceptional man.
Hugh is preceded in death by his father, Hugh H. Howell, Jr.; step-father, life-mentor and confidant LTC David T. Wiggers (ret.), and mother, Fay Moffett.
Hugh was an amazing husband, father, and the best Papa ever. He will forever be missed, yet his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, reminding us to embrace every moment, to love deeply, and share our gifts generously with the world.
Hugh was cared for by Amazing Grace Hospice Care, LLC in his final days. Not only did they care for him well, they cared for the entire family with grace and skill. We are forever grateful for their services and presence.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
The Family has asked in lieu of flowers, donations in Hugh's honor be given to any of the following charities.
