James Harold Kelly, Jr., a man whose life was a testament to dedication, love, and vibrant spirit, passed away on April 26, 2026. Born on January 28, 1937, in Milledgeville, Georgia, Harold carved out a life filled with remarkable achievements and cherished memories that will forever resonate with those lucky enough to have known him.

A proud Navy veteran, Harold served his country with honor before pursuing higher education at Georgia Tech, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Southern Poly Technical Institute in engineering. His unwavering commitment to excellence led him into a distinguished career with AT&T Telecommunications where he applied his expertise and work ethic with the same enthusiasm and attentiveness that defined his character—hardworking, upbeat, and deeply positive.

Harold was not only a dedicated professional but also a man who cherished the simple joys of life. His passion for Georgia Tech was well known among his family and friends having sold cokes at the stadium as a young boy. As a steadfast Georgia Tech alumnus, he carried a lifelong love for the Ramblin Wreck GT team and never missed an opportunity to attend games, cheering loudly for the school that shaped his path.

Beyond these interests, Harold’s heart belonged to his family. For 67 years, he shared a profound and steadfast love with his beloved wife, Sylvia Bettis Kelly. Their journey together remains a beautiful example of devotion and partnership. His love extended to the grand and great grandchildren, with whom he enjoyed countless afternoons at the ball field, his eyes shining with pride and joy watching them play.

Harold’s family includes those he held close in life: his wife Sylvia, daughter-in-law Lurleen Mason, granddaughters Lauren Kelly and Sarah Tubo, and great-grandchildren Logan, Brooklyn, Evalyn, and River. He is also survived by his brother, William E. Kelly and wife Carol. Though he has been reunited in spirit with his late son Timothy H. Kelly and his parents, Reverend James Harold Kelly, Sr. and Sarah Frances Foshee Kelly, their memories were a foundational source of strength and inspiration throughout his life.

Harold, also known as Poppy, left behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering support. Poppy took joy in celebrating the grand children, always providing a constant reminder that they always had someone in their corner. Not only was he "our" poppy, but he was a poppy to all those who were lucky enough to know him.

Above all, James Harold Kelly, Jr. was a “real man” as so many described him—attentive, genuine, and unwavering in his love for those around him. He leaves behind a legacy filled with joyful moments, enduring love, and an indelible mark on all whose lives he touched. His memory will remain a guiding light, illuminating the path for his family and friends in the years to come.

In lieu of flowers, Poppy requested that donations be made to a college fund for his great-grandchildren, reflecting his love and commitment to their future.
