James Kenneth Starkey, fondly known as Ken, was born on July 1, 1945, in the quaint town of Rydal, Georgia. He spent his formative years in the vibrant community of Calhoun, Georgia, where he graduated from Calhoun High School. On January 11, 2026, he departed this world peacefully at home, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by many.
Ken exemplified dedication in both his personal and professional life. He served with distinction as a supervisor and manager of carpet coating operations at various plants in the area, culminating in his retirement from Mohawk Industries in 2014. His work ethic and leadership were respected and admired by his colleagues, as he fostered an environment of hard work and camaraderie.
A man of many interests, Ken found great joy in nurturing his beloved garden. He had a special affinity for planting flowers and could often be found tending to his yard, creating a beautiful space that reflected his warm and loving spirit. Known for his inviting nature, Ken never met a stranger; he was a beacon of joy who brightened the lives of all who knew him. His laughter and ability to share a joke left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to be in his presence.
Beyond his professional achievements, Ken held a deep passion for his faith as an elder in the congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in Calhoun. He dedicated the majority of his life to ministry, a calling that he embraced wholeheartedly. His spiritual contributions were felt not only within his congregation but also in his efforts to help those around him.
Ken was a devoted husband and father, fostering a nurturing environment for his loved ones. He is survived by his cherished wife, Sue Starkey; his son Shane Starkey; and his daughters, Jessica Fung (Terry) and Tracie Kielty (Chris), all residing in Calhoun. Additionally, he leaves behind his step-son Jeff Gates of Cohutta, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and his step-granddaughter Sarah Waymire.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Lillie Mae Barnette Starkey, and his brothers Allen, Billy, Frank, and Charles; his sisters Melba Hall and Marie Freeman, along with his step-son Robert Gates and step-grandson Tyler Gates of Cleveland, Tennessee.
The memory of James Kenneth Starkey will forever reside in the hearts of his family, friends, and former work associates. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Calhoun. Ken's spirit, a blend of warmth, kindness, and humor, will indeed be missed, yet the impact of his life will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know him.
