James Edward Viney, a cherished soul whose life was a testament to unwavering faith, dedicated service, and quiet generosity, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026. Born on November 2, 1950, in the US Navy Hospital in Key West, Florida, into the family of a career Naval Submarine Officer Father.  Jim’s journey through life was marked by a steadfast commitment to uplifting others and a deep devotion to the Catholic faith passed to him by his Father.

From an early age, Jim displayed a spirit of discipline and dedication. At Fitch High School in Groton, Connecticut, he was a competitive swimmer, proudly earning a varsity letter before graduating in 1968. His formative years were further enriched by his active participation in Boy Scout Troop 51, where he achieved the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout—an early indication of his persistent character and sense of community responsibility.

Jim pursued higher education with a focus on Aeronautical Engineering, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland. His professional life was dignified by a long career with Lockheed Martin in Marietta, Georgia, where his technical expertise and commitment left an indelible mark.

Yet, it was beyond his professional achievements that Jim’s true legacy shines brightest. A devoted Catholic, he served in various roles across the Holy Family and St. Francis de Sales parishes, exemplifying selflessness and compassion. His tireless efforts to support those in need often came at personal sacrifice, extending his comfort and resources to uplift the vulnerable and marginalized. Jim’s extraordinary dedication was recognized when he was honored as the "Knight of Columbus Member of the Year" for the entire State of Georgia—a fitting tribute to a man whose heart beat in service to others.

Jim is lovingly remembered by his siblings who carry forward his spirit of kindness: brothers Robert M. Viney of Mason, OH; William R. Viney of Georgetown, KY; Gregory Alan Viney of Silver Spring, MD; and sister Cheryl (Ann Viney El-Alfi) Von Bargen of Mason, OH. His memory is also cherished by numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins who were touched by his warmth and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his father, Irwin John Viney, a retired Commander and former Submarine Commanding Officer, and a devoted mother, Janet H. Viney, whose legacy of love undoubtedly influenced the man Jim became.

The community will gather to honor Jim’s life on June 18, 2026, beginning at 12:00 PM with a Funeral Service at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, located at 587 Landers Dr SW in Mableton, Georgia. Following the service, a Graveside Service will be held at the Monastery of The Holy Spirit, 2625 GA-212 in Conyers, Georgia, at 3:00 PM, where family and friends will bid their final farewell.

James Edward Viney’s life was a beacon of faith, integrity, and altruism—a sacred example of how one person’s love and dedication can resonate through the lives of many. His departure leaves a profound silence, but his spirit and deeds echo a timeless message of hope, courage, and boundless generosity that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
