Joseph A. Hemphill, fondly known as Joe, passed away on June 22, 2025, in Johns Creek, Georgia, at the age of 82. He was born on April 11, 1943, in Paris, Illinois, to Helen (nee: Stephens) Hemphill and Milo Hemphill, both of whom predeceased him.
Joe dedicated the majority of his professional life to serving his country at the Pentagon, where he held the esteemed position of leader of the Budget Analysis department. Throughout his career, he played a pivotal role in the allocation of assets worldwide for the Army, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his work and country.
Academically, Joe was a proud alumnus of the University of Illinois, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in Anthropology. His education laid the groundwork for a life characterized by inquiry and exploration, values that he cherished deeply.
After retiring, Joe embraced a new chapter of life, which included cruising around the world with friends, an endeavor that brought him great joy and countless memories. He also found considerable delight in researching his family ancestry, reflecting his love for his heritage and history.
He leaves behind numerous cousins who will remember him fondly: Ernest Stephens, Russell Stephens, Jane Robertson, Michael Rohrer, Stephen Rohrer, and Janet Norton. Though Joe is no longer with us, his legacy of professionalism, intellect, and passion for life will continue to resonate with those who knew him.
