Lola Ray passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, after a long, full life. She grew up on a family farm in Michigan, helping to care for her brothers and sisters before moving to Florida and eventually starting a family of her own. She spent the last 36 years of her life in Georgia.
Lola reminds us it is never too late to learn something new. She became a nurse at age 40 and also got her driver’s license at that time. She went on to have a long career as a nurse, caring for others with patience and compassion. She also spent time providing literacy tutoring through the Douglas County Literacy Council. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles bowling, playing poker, and spending time with friends and family. She will be remembered for her humor and her honesty. With Lola, you always knew where you stood.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Ray, parents Anna DeYoung Schutter and Joseph Schutter; her brothers, Stephen, Melvin, Norman, Ernest, Eugene and David Schutter; and her son, Jack Morgenthaler.
She is survived by her children, Anne Green and her husband, Pat; Jeffery Morgenthaler; Victoria Morgenthaler; Gail Stanul; and Margaret Riddle and her husband, Kirk. She is also survived by her sisters, Janis Rogers, Laura Botwinski and her husband, Chuck, and Alice Herholtz; her brother, Gordon Schutter and wife Sherrie; her grandchildren, Michael Green, Fred Green and wife Tina, Julianna Morgenthaler, Joseph Stanul and wife Sarah, Roxane Richir and husband, Jerimee, and David Kolar and his wife, Carrie; several great and great- great grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
There will be a memorial service for family and friends on August 1, 2026, with visitation at 10am followed by services at 11am, at Midway United Methodist Church, 1930 Midway Road, Douglasville, Georgia. There will be a graveside service at a later date, when her ashes will be laid to rest at Casnovia Township Cemetery in Casnovia Michigan.
