Mary Elizabeth Pertain, born on March 25, 1943, in Panama City, Florida, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.

Mary's life was marked by her commendable career as a Realtor, along with her work as a Legal Secretary for the Salvation Army and various other businesses. Her dedication to her work was only rivaled by her commitment to her family and community. She was raised in the embrace of the Salvation Army Churches, where she developed a deep-rooted passion for giving back and serving others, particularly during the holiday season. Among her cherished memories was her involvement with the Angel Tree, a cause that always brought her immense joy.

Education was another important facet of her life; Mary achieved a Bachelor’s Degree from Oglethorpe University at the remarkable age of 52, a proud accomplishment that exemplified her determination and perseverance.

Beyond her professional achievements, Mary was known for her vibrant personality and engaging spirit. She served as a Sunbeam and GirlGuard Leader, guiding youth with her glowing enthusiasm. Her hobbies included playing piano, sewing, decorating, solving puzzles, and walking for cancer awareness, all of which demonstrated her giving heart and desire to uplift those around her. Mary had a passion for world travel, having visited biblical sites that held great meaning for her, and delighted in the joy of vacation cruises with family and friends.

Mary is survived by her beloved daughters, Janet Nickles and her spouse Thomas (Trey) III, Meredith Shatus, and Jill Barnett. She leaves behind cherished grandchildren: Michael, Chad and spouse Alivia, Stephen, and Sarah Shatus, Ashley Armstrong and her spouse Cameron, Thomas Nickles IV and his spouse Madison, Hunter, and Haley Barnett. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Hudson and Walker Armstrong, Jack and Emmett Nickles, and Gracyn and Madelyn Shatus, each of whom held a special place in her heart.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Mary Ulyat, and her son-in-law, Jason Dewey Barnett. Their memories live on within the stories and love that Mary shared with her family.
