IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Louise
Smith
August 16, 1925 – February 6, 2026
Mary Louise Smith, a beloved matriarch and cherished figure to many, passed away peacefully at her home on February 6, 2026, at the age of 100. Born on August 16, 1925, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Mary Lou lived a life rich with love, purpose, and an unwavering dedication to her family.
During the turbulence of World War II, Mary Lou served her community by working at a bank in Washington, D.C., a testament to her commitment and fortitude during challenging times. However, it was in the nurturing of her family that she truly flourished, primarily embracing the invaluable role of a homemaker. She was a proud member of the Mothers Club, where her generosity and spirit touched the lives of many.
In her leisure, Mary Lou found solace and joy in needlepoint, a relaxing pastime that showcased her creativity and attention to detail. Her fondness for the Boston Celtics spoke to her vibrant personality and love for sports, uniting her with fans who shared her passion.
Mary Lou's legacy lives on through her son, Neil Smith, and his wife, Teri, along with their son, Matthew. Her granddaughter, Marilyn Truelove and her husband, Greg, bring forth the next generation, along with their two children, Eric and Samantha. Her grandson, Matthew Rice, continues her legacy with his two children, Mason and Maya. Altogether, Mary is survived by five great-great grandchildren, whose lives she enriched with her warmth and wisdom.
Mary Lou will be fondly remembered and celebrated among the family she cherished most—her dear husband, Leroy H. Smith, and her beloved daughter, Lynne Allison Smith Rice, who now gather in spirit.
In a final gesture of love and remembrance, it was Mary Lou's wish for her cremains to be utilized to plant a pink dogwood tree. The family shall convene to grant this wish, creating a living tribute to the exquisite life she led and ensuring that her memory will continue to blossom in the hearts of those she held dear.
Mary Louise Smith’s life was a tapestry woven with love, resilience, and joy—a true reflection of a woman who embodied grace and the profound bonds of family. Her legacy is a comforting reminder of the enduring strength of love that transcends time.
Care of Mary Lou has been entrusted to In Their Honor Funeral and Cremation Providers.
