Michael James Espriella, age 77, of Cartagena, Colombia passed away peacefully on April 27th, 2025 in his hometown of Morganton, Georgia.
Mike lived a life rooted in service, love, and unwavering dedication to his family and country. A proud United States Navy veteran, Mike bravely served during the Vietnam War on the USS Halsey DLG-23, living out the values of honor, courage, and commitment both in uniform and in everyday life.
After his military service, Mike devoted himself to his greatest passions — his family, the outdoors, and capturing life's beauty through his love of photography. Whether it was a misty morning over the cabin meadow, a candid moment of his grandchildren playing, or a sunset that painted the sky in brilliant color, Mike had a gift for seeing and preserving the simple wonders of the world.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Janine Espriella (Ladrie); his four children: Alex Espriella (Gloria Espriella), Christy Rivero (Andy Rivero), Alicia Stevens (Eric Stevens), and Michael C. Espriella (Miranda Maurer); and six treasured grandchildren, who were the sparkle in his eye and the pride of his heart Cito, Christopher, Emma, Catalina, Charlotte & Emelia. He shared a special bond with his loyal dog, Archer, who rarely left his side, offering companionship and unconditional love — a true reflection of Mike’s own spirit.
Mike will be remembered as a loving, kind man — a gentle soul with a heart as vast as the landscapes he loved to photograph. His laughter, his wisdom, and his quiet strength will live on in the countless memories he created and captured with those he loved.
A memorial service to celebrate Mike’s remarkable life will be held on Friday May 2nd at Georgia Funeral Care,(In Their Honor Funeral and Cremation Providers) in Acworth, he will be buried with military honors to recognize his brave service to his country to be announced at the Georgia National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Fred Hutch Center (Seattle, Washington) or World Central Kitchen organization in Mike’s memory — a fitting tribute to a man who served his country and embraced the beauty of life every single day.
Though he has sailed on to calmer seas, the images he captured and the love he shared will forever frame the hearts of all who knew him.
