Nellie was known above all as the favorite aunt, the confidante and cheerleader to generations of nieces and nephews.
Nellie Jane Maxwell, cherished daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Rockmart, Georgia on August 17, 2026, at the age of 72. Nellie was born on November 30, 1953, at McCall Hospital in Rome, Georgia. Throughout her life, she was a beacon of love, kindness, and steadfast faith to her family and all who had the joy of knowing her.
Nellie was a devoted member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Smyrna, Georgia, where her gentle spirit and caring nature left a mark on the congregation. For over twenty years, she served as a Service Representative for Marietta Power, earning the respect and friendship of her colleagues through her diligence and unwavering integrity.
To her family, Nellie was a source of boundless warmth and unwavering support. She lovingly tended to her family members, always ready with a listening ear or comforting embrace. Her home, nestled in Rockmart, was a place of gathering, filled with laughter and the scent of blooming flowers from her prolific garden. Among the many varieties she cultivated, lilies held a special place in her heart—each blossom a reflection of her own beauty and resilience.
Nellie was known above all as the favorite aunt, the confidante and cheerleader to generations of nieces and nephews. Her joy came in celebrating their milestones, nurturing their dreams, and creating lasting memories in simple, everyday moments. She leaves a loving legacy with her surviving sisters, Sherrye Hitchcock of Dallas, GA, and Marrnese Askea of Cedartown, GA. Her love extends to her nephews Billy Hitchcock of Rockmart Tyler Gentry of Carrollton GA Jody Cash of Dallas GA, Jason Cole of St. Louis, MO , and to her nieces Maureen Maxwell and Sherrye Maxwell-Reaves of Douglasville, Krista Maxwell of Rockmart, and Jamie Gamel of Rockmart. She also leaves behind a host of beloved grand and great-grand nieces and nephews, all of whom were dear to her heart.
Her joy came in celebrating their milestones, nurturing their dreams, and creating lasting memories in simple, everyday moments.
Nellie’s story is inextricably linked to those she has joined in rest: her parents, Joseph and Ollie Maxwell; her brother, Gary Maxwell sister n law Lily Maxwell , her sister, Merrye Gentry; her brother-in-law, Larry Gentry; and her nephew, Barry Hitchcock. Their memories were cherished by Nellie throughout her life, and now their spirits are reunited.
In the days prior to her passing, Nellie’s loved ones gathered in her home on August 8, 2026, to celebrate her remarkable life and to offer their heartfelt farewells. True to her wishes, Nellie was cremated, and any further memorial service will be announced at a later date. She would wish nothing more than for those she loved to know peace, and it was her hope that each would come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior—a message ever close to her heart.
Nellie’s faith was her foundation. Those who knew her drew comfort from her many prayers, her encouragements, and her steadfast hope. Her caring soul, love of family, and passion for her garden will continue to inspire all who loved her. Though she is no longer present with us in body, her memory shines on—a guiding light, forever cherished.
May we hold Nellie Jane Maxwell’s love and legacy within our hearts, grateful for the grace and joy she brought to our lives.
