Richard lived a life marked by devotion, steady purpose, and deep love for those around him.

Richard Gordon Davenport, a resident of Marietta, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at the age of 83.

Born on January 25, 1943, in Clanton, Alabama, Richard lived a life marked by devotion, steady purpose, and deep love for those around him. He loved serving the Lord and carried that faith with him throughout his life. He found joy in golfing, fishing, and playing spades, and he also enjoyed reading books and working with wood. On autumn Saturdays, he was especially happy “rolling with the tide” while watching Alabama football. Above all else, however, his greatest happiness was found in time spent with his family.

Richard also lived with a remarkable sense of duty and determination. He served three years of active duty in the United States Army, graduating from Southern Signal School at Fort Gordon. His military service took him to France as well as to posts stateside, where he worked in communications. That experience led to a long and successful career with Bellsouth, where he served as an Acquisitions Manager for the Southeast Region for 31 years before retiring.

His strong work ethic remained one of the defining qualities of his life. As a young man, he began working at just 14 years old, making deliveries for his brother-in-law, even driving before he had a license. Decades later, that same willingness to work and help others was still evident when, at 78, he came out of retirement to assist with Boomerang Sanitation, a family business, making deliveries once again. He finally retired for good at the age of 80, closing a working life that reflected perseverance, reliability, and heart.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Sandy; his son, Jeff; and his daughter, Christy, and her husband, Mike. He also leaves his grandsons, Blake and his wife, Caitlyn, and Nicholas and his wife, Alyssa; his granddaughter, Kayla; and his great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Oliver. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of whom were part of the wide circle of family he cherished so dearly. Those who knew Richard will remember the warmth he brought to family gatherings, the steadiness of his presence, and the affection he so freely gave.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Sunday, September 6 at Gospel Temple Church, 10733 Ball Ground Highway, Ball Ground, Georgia 30107. The doors will open for visitation at 2:00 p.m., and the service will begin at 3:00 p.m., with burial to follow at the same location.

Richard Gordon Davenport will be remembered with love, gratitude, and admiration for a life well lived, a faith well kept, and a family well loved.
