Shirley Ann Dotson, a beloved mother, grandmother, and dear friend, passed away peacefully at home on May 10, 2026. Born on June 7, 1942, in Anniston, Alabama, Shirley’s life was a testament to strength, love, and dedication.
Known affectionately as Shirley, Mom, and Maw Maw, she was a woman of many gifts. As a homemaker, she raised her family with unwavering dedication, instilling values of loyalty and dependability that her children and grandchildren cherish deeply. Her strong-willed and hard-headed nature was balanced by a witty, funny sense of humor that could brighten the darkest of days. Shirley adored her family above all else, and they adored her in return.
Shirley had a special gift for gardening—she could grow anything, and her green beans and canned goods were legendary within the family. Many fond memories revolve around picking strawberries with her, an activity filled with laughter and joy. Easter and Christmas held a special place in her heart, always celebrated with warmth, love, and tradition. Beyond her gardening passions, she loved raising her children and never missed a chance to visit yard sales, where she found excitement and connection.
Her family will forever miss the presence of her late husband, James Riley Dotson, Sr., who shared many years by her side. She also leaves behind the loving memories of her daughter Melody Joy Dotson, her brothers Bobby Moody and Thomas Moody, and her parents, Jack Moody and Ruby Ellen Erwin, all of whom proceed her in death.
Shirley is survived by her devoted son James Dotson Jr., along with David Dotson, Robert Dotson, and William Dotson. Her daughters Kathy Ford, Rhonda Monroe, and Angela Dotson Carnes carry on her legacy of love and resilience. She is also survived by her cherished sisters Carolyn Howard and Mary Ellen. Grandkids like Cody Dotson and great-grandchildren such as Claire continue to be a source of pride and joy. Shirley’s best friend Jodi stood by her through the years, sharing in the laughter and supporting her through the challenges.
Shirley Ann Dotson’s remarkable life was one of love, laughter, and resilience. She leaves behind a family and community forever touched by her strength, her warmth, and the countless memories made in her presence. Though she has passed, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her legacy as a hard-working, strong-hearted, and loving woman will never be forgotten.
