Wayne Alan Rice

Wayne Alan Rice, affectionately known as Lance, was born on September 24, 1945, in Texas. He passed away peacefully on July 13, 2025, in Cumming, Georgia, leaving behind a legacy of love and adventure that will be cherished by all who knew him.

Lance dedicated twenty years of his life to serving in the United States Marine Corps, exemplifying courage and commitment. His military service shaped not only his character but also instilled in him a deep sense of pride in his country and community.

He was most passionate about his family and friends, finding joy in their company and supporting them in every endeavor. He delighted in traveling, having explored nearly every continent, and his adventures sparked the curiosity inherent in him. One beloved memory that epitomizes his adventurous spirit was sailing on the "Serendipity," a friend's boat, where he fondly recalled stopping for ham and cheese subs at Subway before navigating the Inner Coastal of North Carolina.

Lance had diverse interests; he was an avid coin collector and had an extraordinary curiosity for animals, cherishing his many pets, especially his beloved cats, Abigail, Mitsu, and Laki. His compassion extended far beyond his household, nurturing meaningful relationships with friends, family, and all the creatures he encountered.

Lance is survived by his devoted daughter, Dawn Smiley (Barry Murray), and his cherished grandchildren, Michael Joyner, Eric Buell, Charles Buell (Brooke), and Jenna Joyner. He treasured his great-grandchildren, Skylar Jacob Joyner, Lillian Mae Joyner, and Jack Sutton Buell. He is also survived by his brothers, Kevin Colley (Gina) and Dave Watkins (Allison), and took particular pride in his godsons, James and Jason Thompson. He will be missed dearly by his closest companion Kathleen Smiley and his dear friend, Dee Stephens, along with many nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.

Lance is preceded in death by his father, Gordon Colley, and mother, Carol Colley, who had a profound influence on his life.

Wayne Alan Rice's legacy will endure through the countless memories he created with his family and friends, as they continue to celebrate his adventurous spirit and the invaluable lessons he imparted. His presence will be profoundly missed, but the mark he left on the hearts of those who loved him will remain forever bright.
