About Cedartown, Georgia
Cedartown is the county seat of Polk County, incorporated in 1854 and named for the red cedar trees that once bordered the county line. The city's best-known landmark is Big Spring, the second-largest limestone spring in the South, which produces roughly four million gallons of water a day; the spring was once a Cherokee ceremonial ground and later the site of Camp Cedar Town, a Cherokee removal camp during the Trail of Tears. Today Big Spring Park sits just off Main Street and is a designated American Water Landmark.
Downtown Cedartown's late-1800s and early-1900s architecture is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the historic West Cinema Theatre, built in 1941, is still in use. The Silver Comet Trail runs directly through town, connecting Cedartown to the Cedartown Depot and Welcome Center, and eventually to the Chief Ladiga Trail across the Alabama line. U.S. Route 27 carries traffic north 19 miles to Rome and south toward Buchanan, while U.S. Route 278 runs east–west through the center of town.
