Adairsville is a Bartow County city named for Cherokee Chief John Adair, the son of a Scottish trader and a Cherokee mother, whose family settled the surrounding valley before the Cherokee removal of 1838. The Adairsville Rail Depot, still standing downtown, played a role in the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862 and again in the Civil War fighting that passed through the area in May 1864.
