Michael R. Upton of Cedartown GA passed away on Monday, July 3, 2023. Michael was born on September 16, 1948, in Salinas, CA to Herbert (Mack) and Marvelene Upton. He grew up in Vidalia, GA with his brother Christopher Upton and cousin William Morris. In his youth, he worked at Jack’s Drive-in in Vidalia GA and because of his love for music, he also worked at the local radio station, WVOP. After he graduated from Vidalia High school he went to work for Southern Bell. During this time, he was drafted into the Army in May of 1968. After his time in the Army, he continued to work for Bell South, which he later retired after 30 years. During his time with Southern Bell, he attended Mercer University and received a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He also became a proud member of the Masonic brotherhood in 1973. In his later years, because of his love for trains, he worked on a railroad in northern California. He also enjoyed working with electronics and became an avid Ham Radio Operator, call sign WA4ALA.
Survivors include brother Christopher Upton (Ann) Marietta GA, cousin William Morris (Sandra) Ailey GA, daughter Regina Martin (Shane) Jasper GA, Granddaughters Danielle (Tanner, Grandson Baylor) Jasper GA and Amber Greeson Raleigh N.C. Half siblings Kathleen, Daniel, Colleen, Patrick and Candance Upton and Step siblings Connie, Diane, Steven, Cheri and Roxanne Perovich. Mike is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral arrangements were made with In Their Honor of Jasper for July 13th, 2023. Visitation will begin at 9:30 and service will start at 11:30AM. Procession for burial at Georgia National Cemetery will leave the funeral home located at 481 Noah Drive, Jasper, Ga. at 1:15 sharp.
